Jujube / Da Zao
Why we love it
Da Zao offers a tasty way to promote calm and emotional well-being, while supporting digestive health.
Helps with:
How it Heals
In Chinese medicine, Jujube tonifies the spleen and stomach, augments Qi, nourishes blood, and calms the spirit while moderating and harmonizing the harsh properties of other herbs.
In Western terms, Jujube is a powerful herb that is rich in antioxidants such as flavonoids, polysaccharides, and triterpenic acids. The antioxidants in Jujube have been shown to reduce stress and inflammation that causes damage to the liver by free radicals. Jujube supports the immune system, inhibits the growth of cancer cells, and can improve brain function. Lastly, it can support digestion by strengthening the stomach and intestinal lining.
Fun fact: In the traditional Chinese wedding ceremony, Jujube was often placed in the newlyweds bedroom as a good luck charm for fertility, along with peanuts, longan, and chestnuts.
HOW WE USE IT
“In addition to its powerful medicinal benefits, Jujube is a delicious fruit that I love adding to herbal bone broth, porridge, and desserts—or eating them alone as a snack!”
